PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CONDUCT OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE MEMBER FOR BROMLEY AND CHISLEHURST AND THE PRIVATE HIRE VEHICLES (LONDON) BILL (24 March 1998)
Motion Details
That this House condemns the actions of the honourable Member for Bromley and Chislehurst in deliberately blocking the Private Hire Vehicles (London) Bill which, with all-party support, seeks to regulate minicabs in London; notes that in a recent independent opinion poll 91 per cent of Londoners supported checks on a driver's criminal record, health, vehicles and topographical knowledge to guarantee public safety; further notes that there were 66 recorded sex attacks on women by unlicensed minicab drivers in London in 1998; believes that the licensed taxi industry in London, which is renowned worldwide, demonstrates that enforced and appropriate licensing can be effective in providing personal transport of the very highest order in the world; and calls upon the Government to provide the necessary parliamentary time for this Bill to proceed.
