PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
MIDLAND BANK (10 March 1998)
Motion Details
That this House condemns the decision of Midland Bank to withdraw union recognition on behalf of 10,000 managers without prior consultation; deplores the denial of individual and collective trade union representation on behalf of employees, particularly against a background of bank profits which have risen by 28 per cent. to ú1,625 million; condemns Midland's decision to de-recognise the Banking Insurance and Finance Union which has the continuing support of its members and which has played a constructive role throughout a period of major re-structuring within Midland Bank and in assisting Midland to respond to the competitive environment within the wider financial services sector; believes that such a dictatorial managerial culture has no place in developing a commitment to partnership as the basis for corporate success in the future; and calls upon Midland to withdraw the de-recognition and to replace such a confrontational approach with an alternative based upon co-operation.
