PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
REDUNDANCIES AT THOMAS DE LA RUE TEAM VALLEY (18 June 1998)
Motion Details
That this House is gravely concerned about the decision of Thomas de la Rue to close two of the three print lines, and destroy 375 jobs at their Team Valley plant in Gateshead; deplores the pressure of the City for short-term profits which has caused this decision; questions the integrity of the management in directly contravening the European Works Councils Directive; is disturbed by the acquisition policy of the previous management of bringing in unprofitable enterprises; condemns the package of management bonuses based on short-term profit and share price which puts long-term investment in the company at risk; and calls upon the company to withdraw the redundancy notices forthwith and enter into meaningful negotiations with the appropriate trades unions to assure the profitable and long-term future of the company.
