PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
REFORM OF COMPANY CAR TAXATION (3 June 1998)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Budget commitment to review company car taxation; believes that the opportunity to achieve real environmental benefits from such a review is illustrated by research such as that carried out by transport company Arriva, which found that 8.2 billion miles appear to be driven every year solely in pursuit of a tax break; notes that ending this totally unnecessary driving would cut total traffic levels by around 3 per cent; and believes that sensible reform in this area would significantly reduce traffic levels, thus reducing congestion, pollution and noise while saving money for industry which currently pays not only the cost of congestion, but also the wages of those employees who pointlessly drive these extra miles.
