PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SOCIAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL'S SUPPORT FOR WHITE ASBESTOS BAN (2 June 1998)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the view of the April meeting of the Social Affairs Council attended by Ministers from 12 member states, that there should be a ban on the importation, use and marketing of white asbestos; notes that this is consistent with the findings of a recent study commissioned by the Health and Safety Executive from the Institute of Environment and Health at Leicester University which confirms that white asbestos is more dangerous to health than available substitutes; and calls on the Government to act as nine member states have already done and implement an immediate UK ban rather than waiting for every other EU member state to do so first.
