PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
NIGERIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS (26 April 1998)

Motion Details

That this House notes with deep concern that General Sani Abacha, the military dictator of Nigeria, has now secured nomination by all five of the registered political parties in that country to be their candidate for the post of president in the presidential elections promised for later this year; notes that as such he is now the only proposed candidate for the position and that the elections are therefore superfluous and likely to be cancelled; and believes that five parties one candidate if not democratic but an affront to every democratic principle as well as a denial to the people of Nigeria of their most basic human and civil rights.
