PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
FIREWORKS BILL (6 July 1998)

Motion Details

That this House regrets the talking out of the Fireworks Bill during Consideration of Lords Amendments on 3rd July; recognises that as a result it will not be possible to develop a legally enforceable framework to improve standards of safety in the use of fireworks, particularly at organised displays, that this damages moves by the industry, safety groups, enforcement groups and the Government to ensure the highest standards of safety for people attending fireworks displays which they are likely to do in increasing numbers with the approach of the millennium; and, noting that amendments to the Bill put forward by Opposition honourable Members were accepted by the sponsors at both the Commons and Lords Report Stages of the Bill (in the latter case going beyond the recommendations of the Deregulation and Delegated Powers Committee which gave the Bill thorough consideration), calls on Her Majesty's Official Opposition Front Bench Team which supported the Bill in principle to offer the Government their co-operation in finding an urgent and speedy means of bringing this measure onto the statute book.
