PUBLIC AND PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE ON THE PROPOSED MULTILATERAL AGREEMENT ON INVESTMENT (MAI) (23 June 1998)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the Government's commitment given in the OECD Ministerial Statement on the draft Multilateral Agreement on Investment of 28th March 1998 concerning further assessment of, and consultation on, the agreement; and calls on the Government to fulfil its commitment to 'a period of assessment and further consultation between negotiating parties and with interested parts of their societies' (paragraph 3) through a debate in Government parliamentary time and for the Government, parliamentarians and select committees to use the period of assessment rigorously to scrutinise the proposed Multilateral Agreement on Investment and its interface with sustainable development strategy, the International Development White Paper, the EU, the ethical foreign policy, local democracy, Scottish and Welsh devolution and existing multilateral agreements related to the environment, labour standards and human rights.
