PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
ROAD TRAFFIC REDUCTION (NATIONAL TARGETS) (AMENDMENT) BILL (10 November 1998)

Motion Details

That this House recognises the problems caused by traffic, with up to 24,000 premature deaths every year caused by air pollution, with children increasingly unable to walk or cycle unaccompanied, and with business paying the ú20 billion cost of congestion every year according to the CBI; therefore supports the Labour Party's clear pre-election pledges on their election Internet site and in their Policy Handbook to reverse traffic growth, in other words, to reduce traffic levels; further supports the statement given by the Deputy Prime Minister to the Guardian on 6th June 1997 and 'I will have failed if in five years time ... there are not far fewer journeys by car'; welcomes the Deputy Prime Minister's reaffirmation of both these promises in this House on 20th October, Official Report, column 1071; and therefore calls on the Government to support the Road Traffic Reduction (National Targets) (Amendment) Bill, which will require the Secretary of State to ensure his promises to reduce traffic in the lifetime of this Parliament are reflected in any reports published under the Road Traffic Reduction (National Targets) Act 1998.
