PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF CHERNOBYL (21 February 1996)
Motion Details
That this House notes that 26th April 1996 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, that 15 reactors of the Chernobyl type RBMK still exist and that there are several more pressurized water reactors VVER-230 of uncertain safety in parts of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union; urges Her Majesty's Government to propose a programme within the International Atomic Energy Agency to render these reactors as safe as technically possible, looking to take them out of commission at the earliest date; and believes that Her Majesty's Government should discuss within the European Union and with the countries concerned a programme for replacing this generating capacity with non-nuclear systems.
