PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
KASHMIR (27 March 1996)

That this House believes the conflict in Kashmir is potentially the most dangerous conflict in the world; understands that India and Pakistan, which have gone to war over Kashmir, have nuclear capability; notes Indian forces have committed gross human rights violations in the fact of a popular insurrection by the people of Kashmir against Indian rule and a campaign to obtain their right to self-determination; is concerned British Aerospace plans to supply India with 22 Hawk 100 aircraft; fears these aircraft could be used to repress further the people of Kashmir; calls upon the British Government to urge British Aerospace to cancel any contract which may have been signed for the supply of Hawk aircraft and to urge British manufacturers not to supply arms to either India or Pakistan; and believes the British Government should take action to persuade the United Nations to intervene, on the basis of UN resolutions on Kashmir, to enable the people of Kashmir to determine their own destiny.
