PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Nicaragua and the Sandinistas (28 February 1990)
Motion Details
That this House congratulates the Sandinistas on their many achievements, including the liberation of the Nicaraguan people from the Somoza dictatorship the health and literacy campaigns and the establishment in 1984 of democratic processes; notes that the United States-financed war and trade embargo devastated the Nicaraguan economy; further notes that the United States made substantial financial contributions to Violeta Chamorro's election campaign; recognises that the Sandinistas remain by far the largest single party in the National Assembly and achieved a higher percentage of the poll than the present Government of Britain; sees that the United States Government is now promising aid to Nicaragua; welcomes this; but hopes that, Nicaragua having once been liberated from the status of a United States colony by the Sandinistas, the United States will not seek to re-establish their control of Nicaraguan affairs and therefore will respect Nicaraguan independence.
