PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
RESTOCKING OF LANDMINES (23 April 1996)
Motion Details
That this House condemns the Government for its hypocrisy in announcing it would campaign for a world wide ban on anti-personnel land mines while at the same time replacing existing British stocks with so-called self-destructing landmines; notes that such mines still kill and maim innocent civilians and points out that the Chief of the Mines Division at the US Army Research Centre has said that the current failure rate for mines with a self-destruct mechanism is about 1 in 20; and believes the Government's current stance should be seen instead as an attempt to legitimise a weapon that has been described as the world's worst serial killer.
