PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Fines on Brent Councillors (20 February 1990)
Motion Details
That this House notes with total disgust the court fines imposed upon the Mayor, leader and councillors of the London Borough of Brent for voting on rent levels whilst being council tenants themselves; notes that such rules act as a disincentive for council tenants to serve as councillors and militates against the best interests of council tenants generally; contrasts the strict rules governing councillors voting on issues where they have a financial interest with honourable Members who are permitted to vote themselves substantial pay increases; belives that such double standards are wholly unnacceptable; and calls for equality of treatment as between councillors and honourable Members.
