PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
RWANDA AND THE ROLE OF THE UN (10 January 1995)

Motion Details

That this House acknowledges the collective failure of the international community in responding to the crisis in Rwanda; believes that this failure highlights the need for strengthening the United Nations' ability to prevent and respond to conflict-related emergencies in order to protect the basic rights of men, women and children; notes that 1995 is the United Nations' Fiftieth Anniversary Year; hopes that this will provide an opportunity for discussing these issues; and urges the British Government to take a lead in supporting specific reforms to the United Nations including the establishment of an Office of Preventive Diplomacy, improved fast-track standby arrangements, the creation of a rapid deployment force and the establishment of adequate funding arrangements.
