PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SRI LANKAN PEACE INITIATIVE (15 December 1994)

Motion Details

That this House, while recognising the bold initiative of the Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga in opening up an unconditional dialogue with the Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabaharan, urges both parties to continue the second round of talks to forge mutual understanding and respect towards peaceful co-existence so that fundamental human rights such as self-determination may be afforded to peoples of all races in Sri Lanka; furthermore urges Her Majesty's Government to support the moves towards a peaceful settlement which will allow Tamils to return to their homelands in the north east of Sri Lanka; and calls for a review of the workings of the Asylum and Immigration Appeals Act 1993 in relation to genuine asylum seekers from Sri Lanka and elsewhere.
