PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Secretary of State for Scotland's Announcement on Nuclear Waste (14 May 1990)
Motion Details
That this House condemns the Secretary of State for Scotland's announcement overturning the decision of Highland Regional Council to deny planning permission to Nirex for test boring for the siting of a nuclear waste dump at Dounreay; reminds him of the referendum carried out by Caithness District Council, in November 1989, when the residents of Caithness opposed the siting of a nuclear waste repository at Dounreay by 74 per cent. to 26 per cent.; deplores the Secretary of State for Scotland's rejection of the democratically expressed wishes of the people of Caithness; calls on him to rectify this wholly unsatisfactory negation of democratic principles; recognises the rights of the people of Caithness and reaffirm the earlier denial of planning permission by Highland Regional Council; and pledges support to the Scotland Against Nuclear Dumping (SAND) campaign.
