PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
BRAZILIAN MAHOGANY ZERO IMPORTS (13 February 1995)

That this House expresses its continued grave concern at the over-exploitation of, as well as the environmental and social devastation and illegal activities associated with the trade in, Brazilian mahogany, botanical name Swietenia macrophylla, and the consequential threat to the long-term surviva l of the rain forest and the indigenous peoples in Brazil; notes the the United Kingdom is the world's second largest importer of Brazilian mahogany and is, therefore, a contributor to this problem; further notes that in 1994 the British Government supported the listing of Brazilian mahogany under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES, but that this proposal was not successful; and consequently calls upon Her Majesty's Government to support the listing for Brazilian mahogany in Annex C2 of the European Union CITES Regulation No. 3626/82 and to introduce a zero quota of imports from Brazil.
