PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
KENYAN GOVERNMENT'S ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY (4 April 1995)

That this House is concerned at the continuing harrassment and detention of opposition Members of Parliament in Kenya, and in particular the imprisonment of oppositon Members of Parliament Mr Njenge Mungai and Mr Linus Oluoch Polo on charges of sedition; notes with grave concern the continuing abuses in the protracted trial of Koigi Wa Wamwere and others who face the death penalty on charges of armed robbery; concurs with Article 19 which has concluded that the accused are undergoing an unfair trial on false, politically-motivated charges, based on fabricated evidence; condemns the Kenyan government for threatening the main daily newspaper, the Nation, and other publications and organisations critical of its actions; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to protest in vigorous terms at these undemocratic developments and to do so in particular in the various international agencies which are committed to the promotion of good governance.
