PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
COMPENSATION RECOVERY UNIT OF THE DSS (No. 2) (27 March 1995)

That this House calls on the Government to carry out an urgent investigation into the impact of the Compensation Recovery Unit on victims of accident, illness and disease; is appalled that one person, with a spinal complaint, has had to pay back over ú84,000 in benefit to the DSS; is disturbed that about 700 people will have to pay back over ú25,000 each in benefits this year; finds immoral the fact that the Government confiscates money which has been awarded to cope with pain and suffering; notes that more and more people are being forced to accept only ú2,500, the maximum that can be kept without confiscation by the DSS; draws attention to the fact that this penalises the victim and subsidises the negligent, culpable employer and others; applauds the campaigns of the TUC, STUC and Clydeside Action on Asbestos; and calls for parliamentary time to be made available for the honourable Member for Thurrock's Workplace Injuries Bill.
