PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Norway and Commercial Whaling (2 May 1990)
Motion Details
That this House expresses its profound concern at the proposal from the Norwegian authorities to seek a resumption of commercial whaling at the International Whaling Commission meeting in July; believes that there can be no justifiable economic reasons for advanced industrialised nations to resume commercial whaling and that the current programme of so-called scientific whaling being carried out by Japan and Norway is a disgraceful sham rightly condemned by the great majority of International Whaling Commission countries; considers that the slaughter of whales amounts to a crime against the planet; calls upon the Norwegian and Japanese governments to heed world opinion and abandon all forms of whaling; and further calls upon European Economic Community countries to adopt appropriate sanctions against Norway and Japan if they persist.
