PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY AND HOMELESSNESS (9 July 1995)

Motion Details

That this House demands that the national tragedy of the vast numbers of people across the country facing life with no home and no future is tackled head on; calls on the Government to drop the dangerous plans that will leave the homeless with little hope, contained in the White Paper ironically titled Our Future Homes; notes that the White Paper proposals to cut emergency and long term need to homeless people and to remain equivocal on the issue of specific capital funding for the Rough Sleepers Initiative is completely wiping out any glimmer of hope of escaping from pre-Victorian poverty conditions, while actions such as allowing private developers to bid for part of the housing association grant makes a mockery of any attempt to build a strong, viable, affordable housing sector; despairs that these plans plus the cuts in income support for mortgage interest and housing benefit will leave people, from children to the elderly, dejected, depressed, helpless and bitter at their needless plight; demands that this sorry state of affairs is reversed; and congratulates Norton House and Coventry Cyrenian in their efforts to provide shelter for the homeless in Coventry.
