PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CHANNEL 4 CHRISTMAS PROGRAMMES (1 December 1993)
Motion Details
That this House deplores the decision by Channel 4 to broadcast as a travesty of Christmas an 'alternative' mixture of programmes, celebrating homosexuality and prostitution; recognises that Christmas is a Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ; applauds the moral lead given over this matter by the Bishops of Peterborough and Malmesbury and by other senior churchmen; recognises that the Channel 4 programmes offend against good taste and decency and are likely to encourage or incite criminal gross indecency and be offensive to public feeling, contrary to section 6(1)(a) of the Broadcasting Act 1990; and calls on the Independent Television Commission to fulfil its statutory duty to do all that it can to secure that its licensee complies with the said Act and, in default, calls on advertisers to boycott the programmes, for those advertisers who remain to be boycotted by decent people, and for this House to bring the Independent Television Commission to account.
