The church was founded by St Edern back in the 6thC, though the present building dates back only to 1870. From the 17th century onwards, the tithes belonged to Jesus College, Oxford and it was the college which would appoint a rector for the parish from amongst its graduates. Thomas Gwyn (d1645), the then rector of Bodedern, had been prominent in setting up Jesus College to educate the sons of the Welsh gentry www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/history/welsh.php http://www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/history/welsh.php.
