The post office, which was in the right-hand end, was called plain 'Whit(e)church' until 1973 when it was renamed Whitechurch Canonicorum – the alternative spelling of the village including the 'e'. It closed on 1 July 1998. The inscription above the main door reads "Charles Knight 1884".
