Showing the impressive west front. The first church on this site dates from 757, although this was replaced by a Norman cathedral in about 1090. Unfortunately, the associated monastery was unable to support the building and it had fallen into ruin by the end of the 15th century when the present abbey church was founded. This was ruined after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, but was subsequently completed in 1611.
