By the time the Swale has reached Brompton, it has escaped the hills and is approaching the Vale Of Mowbray. However, it is still a fast flowing and unpredictable river which can easily flood and cause damage to its banks. At this point the bank has been reinforced with huge limestone blocks in an effort to prevent the river encroaching on the nearby road.
