Reading has a reputation - not undeserved - for being a soulless, commercially-minded kind of place. However it has always been a place of great strategic importance, situated as it is on the Kennet close to where it meets the Thames, and on the main road to the West. Its history can be seen in buildings like the George Hotel - dated 1506.
