Crossways near Firle

A meeting of lanes and tracks. That running north-south is The Street and leads to Firle, out of shot to the left is Wick Street, whilst to the right is an old track to Preston Court. The entrance lodge to Firle Park is also on the left hand side out of shot. The old medieval Lewes-Alfriston route ran north-south and was turnpiked as a coaching route in 1752. This was superseded by a new one in 1810 which ran from the north but then turned into Wick Street. This became the A27 and remained until the 1960s when the A27 was straightened between the Firle turning and Middle Farm.
