Here in 1762 an infamous fraud was perpetrated in the presence of Samuel Johnson and the Duke of York. At No. 20 Cock Lane seances were held at which a young girl, Elizabeth Parsons, made contact with a dead spirit. Needless to say, it was a hoax and her father, who had organised the stunt, was literally pilloried! Long, D. (2021). London’s Secret Square Mile. 2nd ed. Cheltenham: The History Press.
