A familiar name in the area, the Clunderwen "Emporium" is as old as the village, and shares its raison d'être. Before the coming of the railway there was little more here besides the farm of the same name. The South Wales railway reached here in 1854, and in 1876 it became the junction for the branch to Rosebush. The railway allowed export of produce to a national market, and import of new-fangled agricultural equipment and supplies, and the Emporium became a major distribution point.
