Born in Edinburgh he founded the Edinburgh Fire Brigade in 1824. The first municipal fire brigade in the world. He also set up the London Fire Brigade in 1833 and was killed when a wall collapsed on him whilst fighting a fire in London in 1861. The statue is near the location of his first fire station.
