This was the home of Sir Donald Pollock, (1868-1962), benefactor to Edinburgh University. The Pollock Halls of Residence his bequest. Amongst much else he was chairman of Metal Industries, the shipbreaking firm and, when the Cunard liner "Aquitania" was scrapped, saved these railings and had them fitted around his garden wall. Crossed anchors can be seen in the photograph and elsewhere there are monographed letters A for "Aquitania".
