The church is situated on a hill near the junction of the ancient highway along the Wylye valley with the old road from Chitterne and the footpath across the marshes to Sherrington. The tower forms a landmark which can be seen from a considerable distance. Although there is no written records about the church before the 13th century, a remnant of the early Saxon cross suggests that this was a site of Christian worship as long ago as the 8th century.
