In front of buildings forming part of the University of Central Lancashire the four pillars and railings breaking into the roadside stone wall mark the point where the Lancaster Canal passed under the road. The bridge itself has been removed but the implication is that there were three spans: the wider central one would have been over the canal itself and the narrower side spans could have crossed railway sidings that served the various wharfs and coal yards alongside the canal.
