(Halyzia sedecimguttata, often written more compactly as Halyzia 16-guttata) This species of ladybird was quite numerous on some wooden fencing located in deciduous woodland in the Saltings. It is orange with twelve to sixteen creamy white spots, and has orange legs. Many aphids were also marching in lines along the same fencing; they seemed not to notice the ladybirds until almost in contact with them, at which point they would turn aside. In any case, this species of ladybird does not eat aphids, but feeds on mildew instead. See http://www.coleoptera.org.uk/species/halyzia-sedecimguttata (at UK Beetle Recording) for further information. For other images, see Image, Image and Image; the last two of these show groups.
