This Archway is known as the Horse Wash Arch many years ago, before the Sutton Harbour Lockgate was built when Sutton Harbour was Tidal. The men in charge of the Horse and Carts used to bring their Horses under the Quay through the Arch and on to the small Beach to the right of the photograph to wash and groom the Horses. During the Development at North Quay the Engineers had to keep the Archway intact. Just above on the Quayside is a small Plaque telling the full story. This is all that can be seen as the water is more or less at a constant height.
