Originally part of the old London-Brighton coach road running up the hill past the church before continuing on towards Clayton. The coach road was rerouted in the mid 19th century which is now the current A273. The lane lost its access to the A23 when the junction of the A273 was changed in the early 1990s. It now runs between the crossroads next to the church and a link road between the two A roads at the foot of the hill.
