The successor to the abbey at St. Ebbes (St. Abbs), a charter was granted in 1098AD by King Edgar, to found a church here which later became a priory during the reign of Edgar's brother, David I. By the late 13th century, the Priory was fully operational but, by the mid 17th century. the building was in ruins - a new church grew out of those ruins.
