Silhouetted on the right is Birnie Rhind's 1906 Royal Scots Greys Monument. Across Princes Street gardens, in front of the tall spire of the former Tollbooth Church (now The Hub), are frontages on Mound Place, including the thin towers of New College and Assembly Hall, built by Playfair in the 1840s as a Free Church and theological college.
