The disused Alderman Canal, in the heart of Ipswich, once linked the River Gipping to Handford Mill. Its stagnant waters are covered with green weed. It was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1996 by Ipswich Borough Council, due to the high value of the site to both wildlife and local people.
