Stourport on Severn is a canal town, owing its existence to James Brindley who chose this site as the point where his Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal would join the River Severn, having followed the Stour Valley down from Kidderminster. The canal arrived in 1771 and the canal company built a bridge across the river in 1775 - although the present bridge dates from 1870. This picture looks down Bridge Street from the junction with York Street and High Street in the heart of the town.
