The base of the bronze statue of Guglielmo Marconi, Father of Wireless, near the Civic Centre, in Marconi Plaza, Chelmsford. The sculptor was Stephen Hicklin. The base reads: "Guglielmo Marconi 1874 - 1937 The Father of Wireless The World's First Transatlantic Transmission 1901" Please note, Marconi never considered himself the "Inventor" of Wireless/Radio, as there were many others who contributed to its invention, which he acknowledged. However he took a scientific effect and turned it into useful wireless communications against all odds and is truly the "Father of Wireless". For more on the Life, Science and Achievements of Guglielmo Marconi, see the award-winning "MarconiCalling" website, now housed at the University of Oxford together with the historic Marconi Collection.
