London Road municipal cemetery, opened in 1847, is on the undulating site of a disused medieval stone quarry landscaped to designs by Joseph Paxton. The intention was for it to be a public park at the same time as being a burial ground for the dead. At the time of opening it was on the outskirts of the city. It was later extended on the south side of the railway line. The cemetery north of the railway is a grade I listed park/garden.
