Although it is not now easy to visualise, until 1931 there was a railway here which passed under the bridge and connected with the rail network near Foregate Street station. The original intention was that the line, built in 1860, would continue to the canal at Diglis Basin but the church authorities would not allow it to pass in front of the cathedral - so it terminated somewhere in this immediate vicinity where goods could be transshipped to and from river vessels. The rebuilding of Worcester Bridge caused the railway to be truncated at North Parade where it continued to operate until 1957.
