Viewed from the top of the Kymin (252m) the town is spread out in at the confluence of the Monnow with the Wye. The town has three distinct sections; the nearest part is Wyesham/May Hill to the east of the Wye, the central part beyond the Wye Bridge is the old town with the church spire, Boy's School and remains of the castle, and Over Monnow with its housing estates beyond the mediaeval Bridge. The hills in the distance are (left to right) Blorenge, Ysgyryd Fach, Pen-y-fan (distant), Sugarloaf, and Ysgyryd Fawr.
