Alder trees grow in Atherton and there are many 'alder' names - e.g. 'Alder House'(to the right of this photo), 'Alderfold Street'. These trees grow well near water and Atherton is traditionally 'the town of the seven brooks'. The water was used to service the industry of Atherton - coal, cotton and nails. One theory for the naming of the town was 'the town of the alders' - Aldertown/Atherton.
