The building, at the south-east end of Market Square, was originally the County Hall dating from around 1740. At some point it became the Crown Court and became briefly nationally famous in 1964 when the Great Train Robbers were tried and sentenced here. The lions on plinths in front were a gift of the Rothschild family.
