The Reverend Dr Nevil Maskelyne (6 October 1732 – 9 February 1811) was the fifth English Astronomer Royal. He held the office from 1765 to 1811. Maskelyne made significant contributions to the science of astronomy, latitude and longitude, and hence navigation. He also instigated an experiment at Schiehallion to attempt to determine the density of the earth, had much to do with the Mason-Dixon survey, and was key to the eventual adoption of the Greenwich Meridian. His work in trigonometric observations led directly to the Ordnance Survey which was eventually extended across the country. See; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevil_Maskelyne
