Sainsbury's Distribution Depot

In 1982 Sainsbury's opened their distribution depot on Stakehill Industrial Estate at Middleton north of Manchester. It supplied all the supermarkets in the north of England for 19 years until its closure in February 2001. The photograph was taken in January 2000 when a brand new fleet of 45 Scania trucks was introduced but within twelve months of this picture being taken the depot was to close with the loss of 300 jobs with all operations moving to Haydock. The depot then remained empty for the following six years. Image Image
